Devil's Diner

Every person in the world needs to eat. And this particular student is no different. In fact I have never seen a person take advantageous of their unlimited meal plan like this guy does. I seriously have no idea where it goes. The obvious reason why people eat is to live and recharge. But the Devil’s Diner in Palo Verde Main not only provides decent food to its patrons but grants a great environment for students to reside in. The many chairs and lounge areas to sit in gives the student the opportunity to study while they eat or talk while they consume their meals. According to the student that is being observed, he is very satisfied with the facilities of the Devil’s Diner. Because he frequents the diner so much he gains strength and energy as well as some rest time to tackle academics. The overall environment of the place is one that his positive and thus helpful to the own mental health. Thus, according to Lounsbury, “students satisfied with  one  domain  of  their  college  experience  are likely to be  satisfied  with  other  domains,  and  vice-versa”(717). Therefore, due to the fact that the student enjoys the atmosphere of the diner, this ultimately will spread to enjoying the overall other facilities of the campus. This mental boost is crucial in having and enjoying the benefits of overall campus life. Which in turn, will ultimately make a student much more easily attuned into maintaining a good academic GPA and being mentally healthy with the environment. For students living off campus eating at home on the other hand, will not experience the feeling of being satisfied with the diner and thus with all the other facilities of the school thus leading to an absence of the mental boost that students living on campus would gain. Otherwise, everyday life on campus would be a boring or frustrating struggle. The overall campus can be said to be driven on food, otherwise students would not even be able to study or even have healthy diets. The diner is definitely a recommended place to go for good food and some social activities.

Living in dorms is arguably one of the biggest parts about living on college campuses. When in dorms, students are most likely living on their own for the first time in their lives. They have more independence and can choose to do what they want. The student who is being observed spends most of his time in the Palo Verde West dorms. This is no surprise and is pretty normal for any student that lives on campus in most cases. Furthermore, the dorms can be seen to some as a negative and not very beneficial area to be in due to how many students are staying at the dorms and with the large population cramped into one area comes many distractions. But from observing the student, revealed that at times this may be the case but most of the time the dorms are made to actually find benefits between socializing and academics and at the same time promote the healthy environment. With one’s own room, there is privacy and a space for a student to create their own space and control their own environment, deciding how academic or social it will be. Furthermore, college dorms provide the ultimate out of class room setting and according to Isset, one can “routinely discover cognitive gains of students implementing opportunities for college students to reflect on out-of-class educational experiences” Meaning that it is ultimately beneficial for students living out of class to use their educational skills to reflect and think about their activities. Thus having a social life outside of the class and in the dorms provides more opportunity for understanding and implementing different parts of education. When living outside the dorms in ones parents’ house or by themselves, there is definitely a good environment for academics but there is a lack of great social interaction that would be found when living on campus. Thus, when living off of campus there is a lack of balance with academics and social aspects thus not giving the student the healthy mental state needed to maintain good academics.

SRC

Going to the gym may on the surface seem like a place to just get a good workout and get fit. Most people probably do not think about the other multiple, possibly ‘hidden’ benefits that come from doing physical activities. When one looks at the bigger picture it can be seen that it is actually a great environment to find the healthy environment that is optimal for college life and academics. All the buildings on the college serve a certain beneficial purpose. Thus, the Student Recreation Center also provides students with opportunities for students to be in an environment that is healthy and beneficial. Moreover, according to reachout.com, having physical activity is very important and beneficial in “helping you [students] to manage stress” and “clear[ing] your [a student’s] head”. This action of clearing one’s head is crucial in finding balance with the social and academics. Many students can testify that all ways having studies on their mind can be draining and detrimental to their thought process. The brain is also a muscle and if it is worked too hard and fast it can also get injured. Talking to the student that was observed says that the reason for going to the gym several times a week is not only to get physically fit but to clear his own mind form the many assignments that he needs to accomplish. Furthermore, the SRC is a great place to be social with others, whether it be talking or just working out with other. Thus in turn, gives students more opportunity to break away from constant study and get to relax and form bonds with others. The SRC is ultimately very beneficial place for him and many other students because it provides the benefits of promoting academics and social interactions.

Hayden Library

Going to the library is a great way to get into a more educational atmosphere. But the way that the Hayden Library is set up it can also be a great social gathering place with an emphasis on education. Having different areas of the library for different types of studiers gives students options to learn on their own in a quieter lone wolf approach or if they prefer in a more group oriented study group. The student that is being observed lives 5 minutes away and that’s just walking. While at the library he studies most of the time with himself, going at his own pace and at other times with fellow students who even live in the same dorms as he does. By spending his time in the library he is able to reap the benefits of a great environment that balances both education and socializing. Furthermore, according to Joseph Sirgy one of the main aspects of having a library is it fulfills a satisfaction and constructs a better “overall quality of college life” (346).  Thus, going to the library will subconsciously give a better state of mind or quality of life for the student. The library provides services and materials that will give any student the tools to do better in the class room on their tests and projects. Moreover, if a student understands that all different tools are at their own disposal they will ultimately feel happier and satisfied more by the grades that ultimately is a product of going to the library. The student being observed during his library time concurred with Sirgy’s statement and said that ‘He is content with the libraries close proximity and usefulness.’ Conclusively, living on campus opens up much easier access to the library facilities and therefore increasing academics and a healthy state of mind.

One student's life on campus: the benefits

View Following one student's life on campus in a larger map ..             To some, living on a college campus is a recipe for distraction and therefore making it much more of a challenge to do well academically. Some students who stay at home are most likely have thoughts that due to there being so many students and events happening around there vicinity that they cannot get anything done academically because they will be drawn to those distractions. This fact is true in some cases but for some students, living on campus is actually beneficial to carving a path of great academic success as well as maintain a healthy state of mind. Furthermore, what really makes collage life beneficial is the actual areas a student visits and spends there time in.
In daily life the words benefit or beneficial are thrown around frequently. The word surely holds different meaning to different people. The classification for what beneficial means in a collage setting, is something that is beneficial that would give a person a healthy environment that promotes both socializing and education and several other traits on the side that would help boost both. Furthermore, in the context of this paper a healthy environment is categorized as being an environment with an equal balance of social and educationally benefiting properties to it. Meaning that it is not so social that it is actually a full blown party with so many people that any person trying to read a book would fail horribly in attempting to do so. On the other hand, it is not so study intense that a person’s mind crashes due to much being taught at once. Thus, environments that would fail as being healthy would be mostly house parties and sporting events such as the football games. Additionally, being academically successful would be categorized as maintaining a GPA of at least a 3.0 and above. Thus, the measure of success or failure would be anywhere below or above that GPA. Moreover, a healthy state of mind is being in a state where one is not depressed, mentally drained, or loneliness.
In the case of this project, there will be more of an emphasis on an individual student. The map will reveal locations of where this particular student spends his time the most during the school week and how those areas affect him mentally and physically. Moreover, there will be his own feedback on what benefits he feels he gets out of being in those areas and this will be compared and linked to scholarly sources.
By following this particular student, it can be concluded that living upon a campus is of great benefit as opposed to being a burden to finding balance academically and socially and overall keeping a decent grade point average, which is classified as having a 3.0 and above. Furthermore, by living on campus the student grants easier access to school buildings and resources that are not as easily accessible when living off campus, due to distance, time, and etc…  Such building or areas that the student has quick and easy access to are the dorms of Palo Verde West, the diner of Palo Verde Main, the Hayden library, and the Student Recreation Complex. Moreover, each of these areas provides the benefits of academic success and a healthy state of mind through the healthy atmosphere that is provided.  Furthermore, these areas do not have the same intended effect on every student at ASU. But through careful observation of the individual student that is being followed it will be revealed to have the intended outcomes that will be discussed on the annotations of each area of the map.
Conclusively, though that some students conception of living on campus may be thought of as negative, and some parts may very well might be so, through research and observations of one particular student that there are more positives that out way the negatives. The reasons for such positives are because of the benefits that living on campus holds. The biggest and most easily revealed is due to the many buildings as and the many functions these buildings and areas serve for the many students at the campus. The areas that the student resides in shows in a much narrower scope of how living on campus and going to the multiple areas sited by the map will actually be beneficial. This example could possibly be applied to every campus although they may not be identically the same. Furthermore, due to the fact that of following one student and is ultimately confined to the limited areas that he frequents this undeniably reveals that there are so many others areas on the campus for the various other students that would and can have the same benefits but just presented differently. In addition, the reason for why debating whether or not living on a college campus is beneficial is important because in our country college is arguably a vital part of life. Almost anyone needs a college degree in order to get a high paying job or a job at all. Thus, it is important to discuss what is the most effective way of attaining a college degree and one of the vital parts of college is ultimately living on a campus.
